FORT KNOX, Ky. -- The 3d Sustainment Command (Expeditionary) recently hosted its human resources conference, July 13-14, at the Fort Knox Leaders Club.
The conference served as a method to get the 3d ESC’s subordinate human resources personnel together in an open forum to discuss their roles in contingency operations, Army Force Generation management and wartime operations.
Human resource professionals from the XVIII Airborne Corps, 7th Sustainment Brigade, 49th Quartermaster Group and 310th Sustainment Command (Expeditionary) attended the conference and traveled from Fort Bragg, N.C., Fort Eustis, Va., Fort Lee, Va., and Indianapolis Ind., respectively.
Attending from Fort Knox were personnel from the 233rd Transportation Company and 19th Engineer Battalion.
“We wanted to get everyone together on the same common operating picture in contingency, ARFORGEN and wartime operations,” said Lt. Col. Tracey Clyde, the 3d ESC G1 human resources officer in charge and Shiprock, N.M., native. “As a result, we were able to get in a lot of good crosstalk between subordinate units about their processes and procedures.”
Those attending the conference were allowed the opportunity to share ideas on how they could better serve their customers, commanders and missions.
During the conference, topics of discussion included Army Central Command strength accounting, human resources roles and responsibilities, medical non-deployable management and wartime actions and awards.
Beginning with a tour of the new Lt. Gen. Timothy J. Maude Complex on Fort Knox, the conference allowed those attending to share lessons learned, and network with others within their career fields. This was done to give attendees the opportunity to meet some of the personnel responsible for making decisions within the human resources community.
Clyde mentioned being able to pass on information to units preparing to deploy as a highpoint of the conference. With this method, Clyde said that the 3d ESC could pass on processes that did and didn’t work for the command during its deployments.
“With the 310th ESC preparing to deploy to Iraq, we were able to arm them with what made us successful there during our tour,” said Clyde. “We were able to say here’s what worked and didn’t work for us, and give them an idea of the tools they would need when they leave their home station.”
As a staff section, human resources personnel play a major role within their respective units. Within units, human resource sections are responsible for providing commanders with the proper personnel needed to accomplish their mission.
“We’re responsible to ensuring commanders have the assets available to execute their mission to include manpower, personnel management and finance,” said Sgt. 1st Class Francis Campbell, the 3d ESC G1 human resources noncommissioned officer in charge and Chicago, Ill., native.
Overall, Clyde said he felt that the conference accomplished what he expected and that he was pleased with the results. He said that lots of valuable information was shared between the different units which could aid in the improvement of future human resource operations.
“I really feel that the conference was successful and I look forward to next year’s,” said Clyde.
