KABUL - An Afghan-international security force captured a Taliban commander, a facilitator and two other suspected insurgents in Nangarhar province last night.
The commander is directly linked to the Taliban emir of Khogyani district and assisted with the recent influx of Lashkar-e Tayyiba (LeT) insurgents into the province. LeT is the Pakistan-based terrorist organization responsible for the November 2008 Mumbai attacks.
The security force captured the insurgents while searching a compound near the village of Khermane, Khogyani district. Afghan soldiers used a loudspeaker to call for all the occupants to come outside and then secured the building.
Multiple grenades were discovered and destroyed at the scene.
An Afghan and coalition security force detained several suspected insurgents while pursuing a Taliban commander in Logar province last night.
The suspected insurgents were detained at a compound in the village of Qaryeh-e Dasht, Charkh district, after Afghan soldiers used a loudspeaker to call for all occupants to peacefully exit the building.
Improvised explosive device material, including a number of blasting caps, was found at the scene.
Afghan and international forces continue to focus on capturing Taliban leaders in the district. A security force detained a Taliban commander Thursday, who was responsible for IED emplacement and attacks against international forces in and around Baraki Barak.
Women and children were protected by the combined security forces in both of the above operations.
An Afghan-led combined Afghan and international forces operation continued in eastern Afghanistan Friday.
The combined force continues to search the area for weapon caches and insurgents who may be hiding in the vicinity of Daridam, Marawara district.
The focus of the operation is now shifting to reinforcing security and providing humanitarian assistance to the civilian population in the area.
The operation began Sunday when nearly 700 Afghan and international forces were moved by helicopter into the mountains near the town of Daridam.
The town and surrounding district was a safe haven and known staging area for insurgents.
An Afghan-international patrol discovered 13 107mm-rocket warheads in a vehicle near forward operating base Ghazni in Ghazni province yesterday.
Working on a tip from an intelligence source that there was a vehicle with explosives in the area, the combined patrol stopped a truck near a command post on the Ring Road (Highway 1) and discovered the ordnance, which was safely destroyed a short time later.
