NATO Headquarters Sarajevo hosted a workshop on drafting the Law on Parliamentary Oversight in the area of defence, security and intelligence-security affairs, March 22, to 26, in Capljina, Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Participants included members of the Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) Parliamentary Assembly and representatives from relevant BiH institutions such as Ministry of Defence, Ministry of Security, Ministry of Justice, the Intelligence-Security Agency and the State Investigation and Protective Agency.

The purpose of the workshop was to prepare a final draft of the Law on Parliamentary Oversight that could then be sent for parliamentary procedure. Development of this Law was initiated by the Joint Committee for oversight of the Intelligence-security agency in June 2009. Since then the parliamentary working group tasked to draft this law has held five sessions and two workshops. The working group's legal team has held almost 20 working sessions.

The Law on parliamentary oversight is the first State law that regulates any area of parliamentary oversight and represents a new milestone in the development of the defence and security structure of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The workshop was opened by the NATO HQ Sarajevo Deputy Commander Colonel John Olsen and members of the BiH Parliamentary Assembly who were unanimous in their support for this law and expressed optimism about its adoption.
