A Day at an Iraqi Iraqi Police Station

    By 1st Lt. Russell Raines

Many Bravo Company, 1st Battalion, 30th Infantry Regiment Soldiers are getting an early education in law enforcement on a daily basis, Iraqi style.

"1st Platoon is helping the Iraqi police provide for a better future in Iraq. The platoon is partnered with the IPs and build a bond through our similar goals for Kirkuk," said Sgt. 1st Class Mike Brown, platoon sergeant for 1st Platoon, Bravo Company. "We spend our time providing feedback and instruction on organizational tasks inside their police districts, as well as offering recommendations on how to keep the city safe from criminals and insurgents."

According to 1/30th Inf. leaders, many Soldiers and leaders did not anticipate a mission like this, it has given the men purpose and a clearly defined goals.

From inspecting checkpoints to investigating crime scenes, Bravo Company Soldiers are tied in with every facet of the eight Iraqi police stations in their districts of the city of Kirkuk. Each platoon is responsible for ensuring that their stations are prepared for the transitions approaching while U.S. forces begin to withdrawal.

"Working with the Iraqi security forces seems to be giving the men a sense of accomplishment, and it is allowing us to push them to where they need be so that we can conduct our planned withdrawal and get everyone home safe to their families," said Sgt. 1st Class Donald Sulewski, platoon sergeant for 4th Platoon, Bravo Company.

The Iraqi police are closely linked to their local communities, and this has led to the formation of bonds between Soldiers and district leaders. These leaders come to the Iraqi Police with their security concerns, and each platoon advises their partners on how to approach the various cases, pointed out 1/30th Inf. leaders.

According to 1/30th Inf. leaders, it has taken several years for Iraqi security forces to reach this level of proficiency, Bravo Company Soldiers are proud to work with individuals that are critical to the future of Kirkuk. The partnership between the two groups will build over the coming months, and each day at the station will be an opportunity to guarantee their success once we leave.

"Every day we go into Kirkuk and try to make a positive impact on Iraqi lives," said Staff Sgt. Jonathan Stone, a squad leader in 3rd Platoon, 1/30th Inf.
