KUNAR PROVINCE, Afghanistan — A U.S. Army platoon recently put together donations to help the family of a girl injured in an anti-Afghan mortar attack, in eastern Afghanistan's Kunar province, Feb. 16

The 14-year-old girl was wounded in the leg when anti-Afghan forces fired at and missed Combat Outpost Michigan, hitting the nearby Kandigal village, Feb. 7. The injured girl was treated at a hospital in Asadabad and is now recovering well at home, said U.S. Army 1st Lt. Gabriel C. Dearman of Hattiesburg, Miss.

Dearman, the platoon leader for 2nd Platoon, Company D, 2nd Battalion, 12th Infantry Regiment, Task Force Lethal, presented items such as blankets, a cricket set and small items to the family, Feb. 16.

"It was the platoon's idea," Dearman said. "We thought it would be a nice gesture."

Of the three mortar rounds fired toward the International Security Assistance Force base, one struck outside a home, injuring the girl, and another damaged an Afghan guesthouse south of the base, Dearman said. The third hit was to the north, with no damages.

The girl's brother, who accepted the gifts on behalf of his family, spoke through a translator and said, they were happy to receive the donations.

"If God is willing, she'll be fine," he said of his sister's recovery.

After the presentation, which included a visit with the girl's uncle, the unit also found a broken water pump in the village. Days later, the unit returned to repair the pump.

Dearman criticized the indiscriminate insurgent attack.

"It saddens me that the enemy has complete disregard for their own people," he said.
