    Afghan national police confiscates explosive material, weapons

    KABUL, Afghanistan - The Afghan national police discovered 200 kilograms of explosive material in Kandahar province Feb. 19 and also discovered and defused four IEDs from the Uruzgan province.

    In another incident, ANP attacked a group of insurgents who attempted to place a roadside mine in the Arghandab district of Kandahar province Feb. 19. Subsequently one insurgent was killed and two were arrested with one Kalashnikov rifle and one IED.

    In a separate operation, ANP and ISAF forces searched a compound in the Sar Roza district of Paktika province yesterday and found a cache of ammunition including five machine guns, one mortar round, one rocket-propelled grenade, 50 boxes of machine gun rounds, 17 IEDs and 15 rocket rounds.

    In another operation, ANP in Takhar province confiscated 255,000 in Afghan currency, five mobile phones, 10 rocket rounds, five magazines, four Kalashnikov rifles and nine military uniforms.

    The ammunition was confiscated and destroyed.

    Separately, two civilians were killed in mine explosions in Nahar Saraj District of Kandahar province Feb. 20 while four civilians were killed when their vehicle struck a roadside mine Feb. 19.

    "We resent the tactics of the insurgents to target innocent civilians," said Sardar Mohammad Zehzai, the Kandahar provincial chief of police. "Working with our ISAF partners, we are committed to making our country safe for everyone."
