Afghans Turn in Weapons Cache

Courtesy Story

KABUL, Afghanistan — Afghan citizens turned in a cache of munitions to Spanish forces based in the Qala e Now district, Baghdis province, yesterday.

The cache consisted of 78 82mm Russian mortar rounds, nine PG-7 rockets and five 82mm Chinese recoilless rocket projectiles. All the munitions were in poor condition adding to the hazard they posed to Afghan citizens.

All the munitions will be disposed of by an explosive ordnance disposal team.

Since the beginning of October, more than 150 Afghans have received cash rewards for reporting weapons caches or providing tips leading the recovery of multiple weapons.

The turn-in of munitions is important because it keeps them from falling into the hands of insurgents.

Afghan citizens suffer four times more casualties from insurgent IEDs than international forces suffer from insurgent IEDs.
