JOINT BASE BALAD, Iraq -- Senior Airman Misty Palmer, 332nd Expeditionary Security Forces Squadron reports and analysis supervisor, is the 332nd Air Expeditionary Wing's Tuskegee Airman of the Week for Oct. 4-10, 2009.
"She's done a phenomenal job providing security for events on base," said Brig. Gen. Craig Franklin, 332nd AEW commander, who presented Palmer with the award and a commander's coin at wing headquarters Oct. 16. "She's the one heading the charge, and because of leaders like her, events like health and welfare inspections are a success."
Palmer managed and led security for three JBB events, securing approximately 1,500 participants. Also, she spearheaded health and welfare inspections. During those inspections, 225 contraband items were seized, mitigating on base threats.
"A the end of the day, knowing that I gave everything I had to give to the mission offers me great job satisfaction," said the Las Vegas native. "I perform the same law and order missions as those at home station, but due to the increased threat and base populace, this is on a much bigger scale."
Deployed from McConnell Air Force Base, Kan., Palmer is her unit's advisory council treasurer, coordinating unit picnics and fundraising $750. She also volunteered to be her unit's Combined Federal Campaign representative.
Pursuing an associate's degree in criminal justice, she is three classes away from her graduation date, slated for December.
"Deployments are a tough time for each of us in our own way," said the Airman, currently serving her third deployment. "I believe it's important to make the most of the time, like taking online classes. This time can used to better oneself while away from family."
Palmer was nominated by her supervisor, Master Sgt. Chad Arnold, 332nd ESFS plans and programming superintendent.
"[Airman] Palmer brings a tireless energy and outstanding work ethic to the job every day," said Arnold. "She stepped in for a member of her leadership when he left on emergency leave. Without provocation, she took over all responsibilities and ran the program flawlessly."
The 332nd AEW Tuskegee Airman of the Week is open to Airmen between the ranks of E-1 and E-5, and is selected based on an Airman's on and off duty accomplishments.
