BAGRAM AIR FIELD, Afghanistan — A coalition forces civil affairs team from Wardak province near Kabul, met with local officials from the Maydan Shahr and the Nerkh districts, Sept. 16, in order to discuss possible support for their respective districts and communities.

Abdul Bdul Kabir Ebrahimi, the Maydan Shahr mayor, talked with the civil affairs team about projects that will help support the people of the district.

Later that day, the civil affairs team met with the Nerkh district sub-governor, Mohammad Hanif Hanifi, to discuss their plan to support his district through development and security. The sub-governor expressed the need to continue drilling the last of the four wells that are currently being dug by a local contractor.

Hanifi also expressed the need to rebuild the Esma Kehyl Bridge as it will make the area more accessible and will aid in transportation for the citizens.

Other projects provincial leadership is involved in include the construction of a school to meet the educational needs of the children in the community.

A possible irrigation program was discussed as a future project in conjunction with the non-government organization called the Global Partnership for Afghanistan. Hanifi was very excited to hear about this program and is looking into more information about it.

Hanifi discussed that security was necessary prior to construction and development projects in the area. The next meeting between Hanifi, local elders, and the civil affairs team is not scheduled as of yet, but projects are said to be underway upon completion of additional project planning.

Currently the civil affairs team is working on six projects throughout both areas to help restore necessary access to roads, water, and education through the combined efforts of the coalition forces and the Government of Afghanistan.
