13th Armored Corps Sustainment Command (13th ESC)

CAMP TAJI, Iraq — In Aug. 14 of the 1161st Soldiers reported to the 9mm shooting range to complete qualification with their weapon.

In order to prepare for the upcoming range the Soldiers had to perform basic rehearsals, including checking for proper function of the weapon, controlling trigger squeeze, controlling breathing, inhaling and exhaling. Part of the training also includes how to shoot from four different positions — standing, kneeling, prone supported and prone unsupported. To complete the training, the Soldiers attended the EST 2000, an indoor electronic and pneumatic simulator.

They were given two seven-round magazines used for the standing position; five-round magazines were used for the kneeling and prone supported positions, and a six-round magazine for the prone unsupported position. Twenty five meter paper targets were used. To qualify, Soldiers were required to hit 24 out of 40.

Even though it was dark and they were wearing all their gear, they still completed qualification — another obstacle in their deployment met to standard.

The use of the Army Combat Helmet and the Improved Outer Tactical Vest protective gear was also mandatory to be worn while shooting. Getting used to the weight while shooting was a challenge. Not only was the extra weight a challenge, but they also had to shoot under less-than-perfect conditions. It was 12:30 a.m. when the range began, so the lack of light was a problem. There were only a handful of generators to provide the lighting. All challenges aside, they were in good spirits and excited for the opportunity to shoot their weapons.

Overall this was a successful training event for the Soldiers of the 1161st Trans. Co. They gained valuable experience on a weapon they would not normally get to use; making the most out of every opportunity afforded them through this deployment.
