1/1 Armored Division Command Sgt. Maj. is Buffalo Soldier
FORT BLISS, Texas - Command Sgt. Maj. James P. Daniels, the 1st Brigade, 1st Armored Division command sergeant major is a bona fide Buffalo Soldier.

Daniels and many other Soldiers around the country continue to up hold the honorable tradition of the Buffalo Soldiers who since 1866 participated in many military campaigns such as The Indian Wars, Spanish American War, The Phillippine Insurrection, The Mexican Expedition, World War I, World War II, and the Korean Police Action.

Congress passed an act to establish the all-black regiments in the regular peacetime army on July 28, 1866.

However, any Soldier assigned to the 9th Cavalry Regiment, the 10th Cavalry Regiment, the 24th Infantry Regiment, the 25th Infantry Regiment, the 27the Cavalry Regiment or the 28th Cavalry Regiment may included themselves in the long honored tradition of the Buffalo Soldier.

"I was assigned as a Squadron CSM for the 4th Squadron 9th Cavalry Regiment, which is part of the original Buffalo Soldier regiment the 9th and 10th Cavalry," said Daniels.

The name Buffalo Soldiers was given to the 10th Cavalry by the Cheyenne Native Americans during a battle in 1867 because of the texture of their hair and the respect the Cheyenne had for the way the black soldiers fought.

In 1992, Fort Leavenworth, Kansas recognized the contribution of the Buffalo Soldiers to American war campaigns by unveiling a monument dedicated to their history.
