The journey to Iraq
CAMP LIBERTY, Iraq – For the 101st Finance Management Detachment the journey to Iraq started around January 2008. This was around the time the unit got the alert, for many they didn't think much of it. For some, this was their second or third deployment, and then there were some that this is their first. After more than a year of long grueling training, they were ready to deploy. They had their pre-deployment bash March 22 and got to spend time together as one large family that day. There was so much love and happiness in the air.

There were four promotions that day. Sgt. Michael Scarlett of Dorchester, Mass. was promoted to Staff Sergeant. Three private first classes were promoted to Specialist; Pfc. Tiando Dong of Wayland, Mass., Pfc. Korey Cabral of Taunton, Mass. and Pfc. Danilo Gomez of Salem, N.H. The 101st also recognized three other soldiers with awards, Sgt. 1st Class Daniel Doherty of Beverly, Mass. and Sgt. Jasen Gonzalez of Stoneham, Mass were both awarded the Army Commendation Medal. Spc. Joe Pendarvis of Dorchester, Mass., received an Army Achievement Medal.

On March 27, the Soldiers of 101st FMD were placed on Title 10 orders then three days later were placed on a plane to Fort McCoy, Wis. After two long months of training at Fort McCoy, they were on their way to Kuwait; but before they left, they took time to commend three soldiers with promotions. Cpl. Esmerlyn Diaz and Spc. Simone Hill both from Dorchester, Mass., were promoted to Sergeant and Spc. Andrew Bell of Framingham, Mass., was promoted to corporal.

After spending nine hot and sandy days in Kuwait, the 101st FMD arrived in Iraq early June where they are currently assigned to Camp Stryker finance office and Forward Operating Base Falcon finance office. Their assignment has changed several times along the way but the mission stayed the same. The mission is to always do their best and put their best foot forward. Every day they strive to live up to all the Army values and warrior ethos.
