CAMP LEMONIER, Djibouti — Service members from the Combined Joint Task Force-Horn of Africa Public Affairs Office, along with the U.S. Embassy here conducted media training for six Djiboutian and Somali media representatives on Camp Lemonier, July 21 and 23.
U.S. Embassy Public Diplomacy Assistant Mohamed Ahmed said there were a lot of firsts for this training.
"Not only was this the first time we've done this sort of training with the U.S. military, but it was also the first time where the Somali and Djibouti news agencies were at the same training at the same time," Ahmed said. "It was also the first time Adil Ahmed Youssouf, director of Le Nation, visited Camp Lemonier."
The first day of training consisted of classroom instruction. The media representatives were introduced to the Western-style of writing, including how to write a basic news story to include facts like the five "W's" and the "How." The second presentation consisted of photojournalism, which topics included exposure and composition.
The media then split into three groups and went on one of three assignments; the boys' orphanage, the cheetah refuge or the English Discussion Group.
The reporters took the next day to write articles and take care of their photos, returning Wednesday to review their work. The workshop concluded with a presentation of certificates and lunch at Camp Lemonier's Bob Hope Galley.
"Our goal was not only to share our skills as writers and photographers; it was to build long-lasting relationships with fellow journalists and the people of Djibouti," said Air Force Maj. Lisa Ahaesy, CJTF-HOA director of public affairs. "The training, provided in three languages, proves that while our cultures differ, we share a mutual goal of telling each other's story through our photos and news articles."
