SOUTHWEST ASIA - Coalition airpower integrated with coalition ground forces in Iraq and the International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan in the following operations, May 15, according to Combined Air and Space Operations Center officials.
In Afghanistan, a B-1B Lancer Bomber struck anti-Afghan forces' communications repeater towers using guided bomb unit-38s and -31s. The strike helped curtail the enemy's ability to communicate and coordinate operations in the mountainous regions near Gereshk.
Near Oruzgan, an Air Force F-15E targeted groups of enemy gunmen in a treeline using a GBU-12 and -38. The gunmen had been firing on a friendly unit passing along an adjacent roadway. The aircraft also flew a show of force following the weapons drops to drive off remaining enemy personnel.
An Air Force A-10 Thunderbolt II hit several enemy fighting positions on a ridgeline near Salerno using strafing passes and general purpose 500-pound bombs. The aircraft intervened following a mortar and automatic weapons attack on an Afghan and coalition convoy.
A UK Royal Air Force GR-9 Harrier conducted a show of force near Lashkar Gah to put a stop to an enemy ambush. Enemy personnel had opened fire on a friendly unit with rifles and rocket propelled grenades. Later on, a B-1B Lancer flew a show of force to disperse a group of anti-Afghan forces personnel massing for attack.
An A-10 carried out a show of force over Ghazni, expending flares, to deter enemy forces preparing for an attack. The aircraft also provided armed overwatch for friendly units.
Outside Bagram, an A-10 flew a show of force to discourage enemy actions while coalition forces took captured personnel into custody. Friendly ground forces completed the transfer of prisoners without incident.
Joint Terminal Attack Controllers assigned to coalition units verified the success of these missions.
In total, 57 close air support missions were flown in support of the ISAF and Afghan security forces, reconstruction activities and route patrols.
Twenty Air Force surveillance and reconnaissance aircraft flew missions as part of operations in Afghanistan.
In Iraq, coalition aircraft flew 26 close air support missions for Operation Iraqi Freedom. These missions integrated and synchronized with Coalition ground forces, protected key infrastructure, provided overwatch for reconstruction activities, and helped to deter and disrupt hostile activities.
Twenty-five Air Force and Navy surveillance and reconnaissance aircraft flew missions as part of operations in Iraq. In addition, two Air Force aircraft performed tactical reconnaissance.
U.S. Air Force C-130s and C-17s provided intra-theater heavy airlift, helping to sustain operations throughout Afghanistan, Iraq, and the Horn of Africa.
Approximately 150 airlift sorties were flown; 500 tons of cargo was delivered; and about 3,600 passengers were transported.
Coalition C-130 crews flew as part of operations in Afghanistan or Iraq.
On May 14, U.S. Air Force aerial refueling crews flew 39 sorties and off-loaded approximately 2.5 million pounds of fuel to 174 receiving aircraft.
