SOUTHWEST ASIA — Coalition airpower integrated with coalition ground forces in Iraq and the International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan in the following operations May 8, according to Combined Air and Space Operations Center officials here.

In Afghanistan, Air Force A-10 Thunderbolt IIs conducted strikes on anti-Afghan forces near Ali Kheyl using guided bomb unit-38s and 30mm Avenger cannon strafes. The jets rolled in and hit several groups of enemy personnel who were attacking a coalition position.

In Bagram, an Air Force F-15E Strike Eagle flew a show of force, driving off enemy gunmen during an attack on Afghan national security forces personnel. The aircraft remained overhead to provide cover afterward.

A-10s flying over Moqor conducted a show of force and expended flares when a combined Afghan and coalition security patrol came under enemy fire. The enemy's shooting ended as soon as the aircraft passed overhead.

An F-15E providing overwatch for a Afghan National Army and coalition forces dismounted patrol carried out a show of force near Sangin. The jet conducted a fly-by to deter enemy forces who had started firing rocket propelled grenades and assault rifles at the convoy from local residences.

Near Gereshk, an F-15E performed shows of force to prevent an imminent enemy attack on an Afghan and coalition convoy. The Strike Eagle, which expended flares for added presence, intervened while performing overwatch when anti-Afghan forces ambush positions were spotted in a local settlement.

Air Force and coalition aircraft also carried out shows of force, conducted counter-improvised explosive device searches, and performed aerial overwatch missions in several other regions of Afghanistan. The aircraft were supporting humanitarian and reconstruction convoy operations as well as combined Afghan and coalition security operations.

Joint Terminal Attack Controllers assigned to coalition units verified the success of these missions.

In total, 59 close air support missions were flown in support of the ISAF and Afghan security forces, reconstruction activities and route patrols.

Twenty-two Air Force surveillance and reconnaissance aircraft flew missions as part of operations in Afghanistan. In addition, two coalition aircraft performed tactical reconnaissance.

In Iraq, coalition aircraft flew 26 close air support missions for Operation Iraqi Freedom. These missions integrated and synchronized with coalition ground forces, protected key infrastructure, provided overwatch for reconstruction activities, and helped to deter and disrupt hostile activities.

Twenty-eight Air Force and Navy surveillance and reconnaissance aircraft flew missions as part of operations in Iraq. In addition, three Air Force and coalition aircraft performed tactical reconnaissance.

U.S. Air Force C-130s and C-17s provided intra-theater heavy airlift, helping to sustain operations throughout Afghanistan, Iraq, and the Horn of Africa.

Approximately 140 airlift sorties were flown; 500 tons of cargo was delivered; and about 3,300 passengers were transported. This included approximately 48,000 pounds of resupply cargo airdropped over Afghanistan.

Coalition C-130 crews flew as part of operations in Afghanistan or Iraq.

On May 7, U.S. Air Force aerial refueling crews flew 49 sorties and off-loaded approximately 3.1 million pounds of fuel to 262 receiving aircraft.
