Capt. Brent Lindley (left) from Hattiesburg, Miss., assigned to the 155th Brigade Combat Team congratulates Sgt. 1st Class Don Oakes of 2-23 Infantry Regiment, from Yakima, Wash. after Oakes received a finisher's medallion following the Fallen Soldier Half-Marathon at Camp Taji, Iraq, Feb. 27. Oakes ran the 13.1 miles in honor of four Soldiers from his platoon he deployed with in April 2007 as part of the surge, who died in combat, giving the ultimate sacrifice for freedom: Jason Lempke, Joe Landry, Nick Olsen and Donald Valentine. Oakes was injured during a breech operation after a wall collapsed on his leg, breaking it in four places. Doctors told Oakes he would always walk with a limp and would probably never run again. Three titanium plates, twelve screws and two surgeries later, Oakes is back in Iraq on another deployment, running for those who cannot. (Army photo/Capt. Jeffrey Hamer)
