Before stepping off on an atmospherics patrol in Rutbah, Iraq, Dec. 29, 2008, Sgt. Daniel Giere (left), a squad leader with Echo Company, 2nd Battalion, 25th Marine Regiment, Regimental Combat Team 5, calls his command operations center to relay a situation report with help from Cpl. Talmadge Flowers, radioman with 2nd Battalion, 10th Marine Regiment. The Marines patrolled with the Iraqi Police, and were assessing the living conditions of the Rutbah citizens.
