In the days and hours before Hurricane Ike's projected landfall, National Guard Soldiers refueled evacuation buses, as well as pre-staged for a rapid response after the storm passes. During the past 48 hours a refueling hub at the Daryl Tully Stadium, operated by both civilian fuel companies and National Guard Soldiers, has served over 1,000 evacuation buses, with 55,000 gallons of fuel. National Guard troops were fueled and resupplied while traveling to pre-staged shelters. After being fueled, the buses and military vehicles were lined up for departure and pushed further inland.
