LATHAM, N.Y. - A Latham-based New York Army National Guard unit will be conducting Water Bucket training over the Hudson River south of Schuylerville on Wednesday afternoon, July 28.
Approximately 16 members of Company A, 3rd Battalion 142nd Aviation operating a UH-60 Black Hawk Helicopter will practice picking up water from the Hudson River, flying with the loaded water bucket slung underneath the aircraft and then dumping it back into the river. The training is set for Wednesday July 28 from roughly 1 - 4 p.m.
This is an annual training event that helps flight crews prepare for possible aerial fire fighting missions at home in N.Y. or elsewhere as needed. A UH-60 will be flown from the Latham flight facility to the Garnsey public airport on the west side of the Hudson River, and south of Schuylerville. The water bucket will be slung under the aircraft at the Garnsey airport and the aircraft will take off to begin the training on the river.
After one crew finishes the training the aircraft will return to the Garnsey airport so that crews can switch out. One additional trip back to Latham mid way in the training is planned and then the aircraft will return to Garsey around 2:30 to continue the training. The intent of the exercise is to maintain air crew currency should the unit be called upon to fight wild fires.
