KABUL, Afghanistan — Joint Afghan and international security forces searched multiple compounds, Aug. 28, in Kandahar province in order to disrupt a Taliban element operating in the region.
One joint force conducted an operation northeast of Kandahar City in pursuit of Taliban militants. The joint force pursued a militant who was killed after he ignored commands to stop and brandished a weapon with hostile intent. The force continued its search and detained five suspected militants.
In a separate operation in pursuit of a Taliban sub-commander and his improvised explosive device-emplacing element, a joint force searched a compound near the village of Mowmand and east of Kandahar City. The force searched the compound buildings without incident and detained one suspect who surrendered immediately and identified himself as the sub-commander.
There were no Afghan, international security force or civilian casualties during either incident.
The Taliban continues to use its extensive network of militant elements in Afghanistan to plan and conduct attacks within the country. Afghan and international security forces are working together to eliminate these Taliban elements and help ensure the legitimate governance of the Afghan people.
ISAF is a key component of the international community's engagement in Afghanistan, assisting the Afghan authorities in providing security and stability and creating the conditions for reconstruction and development.
