KABUL, Afghanistan — An attempt to attack several government buildings in the city of Khost, eastern Afghanistan, was unsuccessful today. The insurgents perpetrating the attack were killed by Afghan national security forces.

The ANSF thwarted the attack as several insurgents tried to destroy the front gate of the police headquarters. ANSF personnel responded before the insurgents could gain entry into the police compound.

In another part of the city, six suicide bombers were killed while trying to storm a government building.

"A group of militants inside of a car filled with explosives tried to bypass a secured checkpoint at an Afghan military hospital," said Lt. Col. Stephan Smith, commander of 2nd Battalion, 377th Field Artillery Regiment. "The vehicle exploded, injuring two Afghan national policemen and two civilians ... the ANSF saved lives today."

The ANSF were first to respond to the attacks and quickly secured the area. They remain in control of the scene with ISAF service members assisting with security.
