FORT CAVAZOS, Texas — Not even a steady drizzle of rain and cool blustery weather could put a damper on bargain hunters browsing a variety of discounted treasures April 20, 2024, at the Centralized Post Wide Yard Sale.

With umbrellas in tow, patrons wandered the parking lot of the old Post Exchange, stopping under rain-soaked tents to barter with vendors selling everything from household goods to clothes, military gear and everything in between.

The third semi-annual event, organized by Cavalry Family Housing and the Resident Advisory Board, was spurred by a push from the RAB and a commitment to ensure anything unsold would be donated to the Cavazos Thrift Shop, conveniently located right next door.

“That’s the RAB’s biggest thing is getting out there, getting to know people, selling stuff and recycling and reusing,” said Leslie Cromer, RAB president. “This helps it to where we cut down on traffic, and we get everyone in one spot.”

Ashley Floedr, RAB secretary, agreed the event was an ideal way to create connections.

“This is the perfect way to meet people that you may not have known are your neighbors, or they live across the street from you, and it’s good to start connecting with your community,” she said.

Floedr added that the event also helped lessen the financial pinch of rising costs and promoted conservation.

“With the uprising economy, debt is an issue,” she explained. “This way, Soldiers can shop local, shop with our own neighbors and save money. That’s our biggest thing with the RAB. We want to reuse, recycle and save our planet.”

Chris Albus, project manager for Cavalry Family Housing, praised the RAB for their efforts in organizing the event.

“Cavalry Family Housing appreciates the hard work of the Resident Advisory Board in the execution of the third semi-annual Post Wide Yard Sale over the weekend,” he said. “Along with the Army, we proudly listen to the needs of our residents and

support their initiatives in making better communities.”

Residents Spc. Daniel Morgan, 112th Cavalry Regiment, and his wife, Samayra, didn’t let the steady showers keep them from bargain hunting and discovering a coveted deployment bag for a fraction of its original cost.

Morgan shared that his unit Soldier and Family Readiness Group plans to use the proceeds from sales to help offset the costs of attending the military ball — a cause he expressed he was happy to support.

“Everyone comes here with different situations, and some people really can’t afford to go,” he said. “It’s giving the ability to sell stuff and help them go to the ball, so I think that’s awesome.”

“Families helping families; that’s what it’s about,” Samayra added.

Spc. Jalan Rose, 6th Battalion, 56th Air Defense Artillery Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division, agreed.

“Not only does it get a group of people together, but it also raises money for stuff that we can do to boost morale,” he said.

Rose, an avid card game enthusiast, and his wife, Amaya, took home “Yu-Gi-Oh” trading cards and some other household items and underscored the impact of recycling.

“It’s really good to reuse or pass it on to somebody else that can possible use it,” he expressed. “Another man’s trash is another man’s treasure, and you never know if you can make somebody’s day through that.”
