FORT CAVAZOS, Texas — Fort Cavazos Cavalry Family Housing officials, volunteers and military families gathered Feb. 24, 2024 for the Lemonade Day registration event at the Clear Creek Main Exchange.

The occasion marks the beginning of an array of events and activities that help educate youngsters about financial responsibility and entrepreneurialism through creating their own lemonade stands.

Chris Albus, project director, Cavalry Family Housing, said the event is in its 15th year and has seen more than 30,000 children participate throughout that time.

He noted that Fort Cavazos started Lemonade Day and the program has now expanded to several other military installations, a fact that speaks to the impact and success of the initiative.

“It’s successful. It has spread, so it allows the military family not just to have the experience here, but at their next duty assignment or wherever they go in the Army,” Albus expressed. “Parents spend time with their children, help them to establish their vision, plan their lemonade stand, build their lemonade stand and then execute on Lemonade Day selling their product to customers. It really builds an entrepreneurial spirit with the kids, but also brings families together too.”

That connection inspired Emily Salter and her nine-year-old twins Leia and Kaylee, to participate in the program for the second year in a row.

“They’re creating that community environment,” Salter said. “It’s great that they provide that kind of group atmosphere. You’re not just doing it on your own, but your also able to talk to other people about how it works, what they’re doing and get ideas.”

Salter added that the event reinforces the value of money.

“The value of a dollar is really a big difference for them,” she said. “Seeing where it goes and how much you’re spending on groceries and lemons and even the cup costs is phenomenal.”

The event appeals to repeat participants and first-timers alike.

Radu Plamadeala had never heard of Lemonade Day but decided to register his five-year-old son Alex after learning about how the event helps youngsters adapt financial skills at an early age.

“At five years old he won’t understand, but at least it’s a base for something in the future,” he said.

Plamadeala said he believes in the success of the program because of its longevity.

“It’s celebrating 15 years, so I think it’s working,” he said.

Once registered, children received backpacks, t-shirts and access to the My Lemonade Day app, and participated in a scavenger hunt to win prizes including a gift card.

A series of activities are scheduled leading up to Lemonade Day to help participants prepare to open their businesses.

Lemonade Day University, which takes place the weekend of March 2, teaches the basics of how to run a successful business.

Participants learn how to execute the plan for their business during the Design a Stand workshop March 16.

With the assistance of professionals at Heights Lumber & Supply, the children will construct their stands on site using pallets at the Build a Stand event April 6.

The young entrepreneurs will have the opportunity to see how their recipes stack up against their peers during the Best Tasting Event a few weeks later on April 27, and they will officially open their lemonade stands May 4.

Salter encouraged other families to get their children involved.

“Do it at all ages,” she said. “At all ages it is absolutely worth it. Being able to do (Lemonade Day) and have that opportunity now, is equally important as the skills they will need as adults.”
