FORT CAVAZOS, Texas — As the nation moved clocks forward an hour for Daylight Savings Time and ushered in the spring season, the Fort Cavazos Cavalry Family Housing’s Lawn and Garden Center helped residents here do the same with free topsoil, grass seed and mulch to keep the Great Place looking its best.

The annual giveaway helps to prepare for the new season and provides tools for residents to get ahead of their seasonal landscaping duties and get a jump start on spring to do lists.

Tyrus Stephens, asset manager for Cavalry Family Housing, says the motivation for the giveaway is two-fold.

“We’re doing it for two reasons — it builds a sense of pride in where the residents live, and also it will help us improve the landscape and curb appeal of the units,” Stephens said. “It’s really important for residents to get that sense of pride and ownership in where they live.”

Stephens explained that the giveaway is popular among residents, who form long lines to wait for their share of the supplies. But the rainy weather reduced the long line to a steady stream of patrons.

Soldiers and family members were greeted by volunteers who issued bags of seed, topsoil and mulch to feed and strengthen their lawns against weeds, fill in ruts and barren areas and improve curb appeal with spruced up gardens.

The volunteers also helped residents transport and load the garden supplies into their vehicles.

Stephens added that the event encourages service members to be proactive in maintaining their quality of life.

“It’s good to see that the Soldiers are taking that initiative, coming out to improve the landscape, which in turn, will improve the quality of life,” he said. “Once you have a good sense of pride in where you live and how you live, it will spill over into every aspect of your life.”

Stephens noted that taking pride in the appearance of housing areas, keeping outdoor areas maintained, tidy and free of trash and debris also helps to reduce the likelihood of fires, which have plagued the installation.

“It’s important to help make residents aware of their surroundings and how to keep themselves and their families safe,” he said.

In addition to the free garden supplies, the center also provides equipment to maintain landscaping efforts and a variety of provisions to help residents address interior tasks.

Residents can rent lawn mowers, weed eaters and a host of other landscaping tools, and pick up things like light bulbs, blinds and filters to keep their homes running efficiently all season long.

They can also borrow things like spreaders, assorted garden tools, dollies and extension cords and are welcome to take items such as outlet covers, shower heads and batteries.

“We are here to assist them.

Anything they may need to do the work themselves is here for them,” Stephens said of the variety of equipment and supplies available to residents.

Residents must present valid military I.D. and proof of residency to check out equipment. Lawn equipment signed out in the morning must be returned by 2 p.m. that same day. Items picked up in the afternoon must be returned the next morning.

Equipment must be clean and in good operating condition upon return. Residents should bring mowers back to the center for gas refills.

The Lawn and Garden Center is open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays and 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. Saturday.
